Inclusionary Housing Project Segregates, Housing Advocates Say
Chelsea Now | A project of mega-developer The Related Companies, the Caledonia promises to be a Zen oasis for the upscale clientele buying into its High Line views and luxe-condo serenity. Yet there’s a twist: Twenty percent of its units will also be set aside as permanent affordable rental housing, compliments of the city’s 80/20 tax-incentive and Inclusionary Housing Program, which are being used by developers in several recently rezoned areas of the city, including West Chelsea. Recently, however, Related came under fire from Community Board 4 for violating the new zoning law by creating segregated conditions in the Caledonia, skirting the integrated housing both programs call for.
