American Studies Professor Mary Rizzo Brings Forgotten Magazine Back to Life

Rutgers University | RU-N American Studies Professor Mary Rizzo was doing research at Baltimore’s Enoch Pratt Free Library in 2014 when she stumbled upon a long-forgotten magazine named Chicory, which chronicled the lives, struggles and aspirations that city’s poorest, mostly African-American, neighborhoods. Published from 1966 to 1983, the magazine grew out of the federal Office of Economic Opportunity's Community Action Program, part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty legislation. Together with the library, Rizzo is now digitizing every issue of Chicory and making them available for a new generation of readers and cultural historians on the Digital Maryland website.
